A Greener Alternative
We asked which bristle we should make next and horse hair won, twice over. It topped the list of bristles you wanted to try, and it topped the list of things you wanted us to actually build. So we built it. Medium horse hair bristles, set into the same bamboo head you already know, sized for the Zen handle that you already know and love.
If you've been brushing with our soft plant based heads, the first thing you'll notice is grip. Horse hair has a natural spring to it, so there's a bit more purchase against the tooth without the harshness people expect from the word medium. It feels a little firm on day one and then settles, because natural fibre softens as it takes on water and gets used.
It won't suit everyone, and we'd rather say so up front. If you brush hard, or your gums let you know about it, our soft plant based heads are still the better call.
Why do we use horse hair for the bristles?
Well... because you told us to! In July 2026, we ran a survey for existing customers asking for their thoughts on the future of our replaceable heads: The materials, the quality, the price & more. Read more here.
We are constantly looking for ways to improve the sustainabilty of our products and making our bristles out of horse hair fits perfectly with that mission. Horse hair is a natural fibre, collected as a byproduct rather than from animals raised for their hair.
FAQs
What does medium feel like compared to your soft heads?
Firmer, with more grip against the tooth, but not scratchy. Natural fibre softens as it's used, so the first few days feel the most noticeable. If you already brush firmly, stay with the soft plant based heads.
Where does the horse hair come from?
It's collected during routine grooming, when manes and tails are trimmed. Our supplier has confirmed the sourcing to us directly.
Are horses harmed to make these?
No. Nothing is farmed, bred or slaughtered for these heads. The hair is gathered from grooming that happens anyway.
Is it vegan?
No. These contain animal fibre, so if you're vegan our soft plant based Nylon 1010 heads are the ones for you. They're made from castor oil rather than petroleum and they're staying in the range permanently.
Will these fit my toothbrush?
They fit the Zen Bamboo Electric Toothbrush. They do not fit the Junior handle, or Sonicare and Oral B devices. Those have their own compatible heads.
How long does one head last?
Around three months of normal brushing, the same as our other heads, so a pack of three covers you for roughly nine months.
Can I compost them?
The bamboo head composts in around six months. Horse hair is a natural protein fibre and breaks down too, though more slowly than the bamboo around it. As ever, the electronics in your handle are a separate matter and shouldn't go anywhere near a compost bin.
Will it smell?
A faint natural scent when it's wet is normal for animal fibre and it fades as the head dries. A persistent smell usually means it isn't drying out properly, so check where it's sitting.
